Character Information
Name: Jade Curtiss (formerly Jade Balfour)
Canon: Tales of the Abyss
Canon Point: At the final fight with Vandestelca
Age: 35
History: http://aselia.wikia.com/wiki/Jade_Curtiss
Personality:
The way Jade carries and presents himself is actually rather pleasant. Either he has a calm look about him or a carefully crafted smile curled on his lips. He's polite in the appropriate social situations. People that meet him can be easily charmed by his manners. He knows how to handle himself no matter who he comes across whether it's simple townsfolk, fellow military officials, or royalty.
He usually offers what he can in regards to help when it's requested and has built many good acquaintance relationships in doing so. In general, he has a fairly good standing with people as a whole.
Jade's composure rarely wavers unless very specific buttons are pressed. It's hard to tell what he's thinking at any given moment since he always comes off as collected and sure. He doesn't anger easily and he doesn't get shaken or scared easily, either. He's rather famous around the world for his renowned genius in fonic artes**, his friendship with the Malkuth emperor, and ability in battles. In actuality he has made himself infamous through his title of Jade the Necromancer or Father of Fomicry.
His being good with people and knowing how to speak to them comes from being logical and manipulative. Knowing how to speak with people means that he can get results that he wants from the conversation. Having a good relationship with people means that he can later ask for favors when he needs them. Coming off as approachable means that people will be more comfortable with telling him things that he would like to know. It's all a strategy.
He's a curious individual and is in the constant pursuit of knowledge. There is still a lot about the world that he doesn't know and he doesn't shy away from learning new things. When he gets a hold of a new subject to learn, he quickly absorbs it since his genius mind can understand new concepts in an instant. An example of this is with Tear's Fonic Hymns. When Jade found out that she could use Yulia's Fonic Hymns, he became nearly excitable with curiosity about them and how she knew them and about how she understood them. During their journey, he's also come across things he didn't have extensive knowledge about and made the decision to study further about it.
Always thinking, he seems to be one step ahead of everyone else or in the know. He rarely expresses surprise when something blindsides the group, though he makes no indication of knowing the outcome of something unless it's appropriate to say so. When Guy revealed his true identity, he already knew who he was. He had a hunch, dug up research, and found out the information, but he never told anyone about it.
Even if he didn't know an outcome of a situation and everyone else is reeling in shock, he just shrugs it off and rolls with it. Because he's constantly thinking, he's able to process problems as quickly as they come and figure out solutions to them. Whether or not he shares those solutions is another matter entirely.
Though, there are a few instances when he's unpleasantly surprised about something and that usually involves the use of fomicry in some way.
Ever since he was a child, he lacked the sort of natural empathy that most people possessed. He would kill monsters for fun just because he could, he was critical of his peers, he only had a few friends (one being more of a tag-along than an actual friend), and he was generally uncaring. It was only when he started learning from someone he respected and admired did he start understanding morals.
To this day, he still lacks empathy and his own instinctual morals. Any sort of sympathy or moral compass he utilizes has come from the learned understanding of right and wrong. He's manipulated fonons in unique ways to power himself up. He created a technique that draws in extra fonons into the body which is extremely dangerous and can drive the person mad and turn them into a monster. He was able to control it and even has a pair of glasses that help limit his powers so that they don't spiral out of control. (Though he's all right without them.) Normally, people would have seen how wrong and harmful those techniques could be and wouldn't go through with them, but he did anyways.
He's able to feel guilt for his actions, however. He knew that a lot of his experimentation caused a lot of grief for people, his friends, and himself. He still feels guilt from killing his teacher as well and creating a monster from trying to use a crude form of fomicry on her for his own self-gratification, that self-gratification being able to tell her that he's sorry for killing her and defying death itself. He also understands that a lot of the world's problems are from his meddling with the natural order of things.
He understands that fomicry is unethical and thus banned the further research of it. His understanding of this came with help from his best friend Emperor Peony IX. If it weren't for him, he probably would have continued his experiments and eventually killed himself from the strain he was putting on his own body. Now he seeks atonement for his past transgressions through helping the world's problems with his genius. He even thought of using fomicry to help people rather than his own selfish purpose of defeating death.
To those that know him the best, they know how much of an ass Jade can be. He relentlessly teases and makes fun of people. He makes offhanded comments and speaks sarcasm fluently. It's difficult for those around him to decipher whether or not they should take him seriously or ignore his flagrant commentary. The only one that seems to be immune to his impish behavior is his best friend since childhood, Emperor Peony IX. But that's probably due to the fact that he's even more playful in personality. In fact, Peony is probably the only one that can tease and bother Jade effectively.
Jade has no problem with being blunt where he feels it counts. He's called obnoxious on several accounts and he doesn't even deny it. He knows exactly what he's doing when he's being mean. Sometimes he goes a bit overboard and gets scolded by the others, but he's unapologetic since he feels justified in what was said. Though he's not unapologetic in an indignant way, he just doesn't care. For example, when Luke was attempting to become a better person, Jade had lost so much respect for him (what little he actually had) that he was relentlessly belittling him and making him feel unwelcome. Tear and Guy both had to speak up and tell him to dial it down a notch.
Speaking of not caring, he can be rather ruthless when it comes to eliminating a potential problem. When Arietta the Wild, one of their adversaries, was laying unconscious he was quick to attempt to end her life so that she would no longer be an issue to them. Arietta was very young and someone important to one of his traveling companions, so he was stopped. But he didn't bat an eye to killing someone defenseless. Later on, she posed as a problem yet again and the others could almost see the 'I told you so' in his face.
Jade can actually be nice company if there were a time someone just wanted a chat or have intellectual conversation. If one can get passed the snark and the sarcasm that comes from him from time to time (or very often if he thinks a person is an idiot) then he can make a powerful and loyal ally. It's getting passed his devilish behavior that is the main obstacle.
((**Fonic artes is a kind of magic that is used in their world called Auldrant. Fonic artes uses fonons which is their world's mana or magic energy, though a little more scientific than 'magic' since it has to do with elemental frequencies.)
Abilities:Specific List of Powers/Attacks Here
Being a genius of the fonic artes, Jade can use a large array artes that are based on the manipulation of fonons (which is something akin to mana or energy) to create powerful elemental attacks. There elements include Shadow, Earth, Wind, Fire, Water, and Light. (Sound is the 7th fonon which he's unable to access because he wasn't born with the ability to use it.) He uses his spear as a catalyst to channel these arts.
Not only is he a genius with using these techniques, but he's also a scientific genius. He's written several books on different scientific matters in his world that have to do with fonons. He even created the concept of fomicry which is replicating living beings (which he forbade further study on). He is also an adept spear wielder and battle tactician.
Strengths:
•Genius levels of Intelligence
•High level battle ability
•Cunning
•Composure
•Resolve
Weaknesses:
•Unsympathetic/lacking empathy
•Skewed morals
•Self-loathing
•Suspicious
•Ruthless
God/Shinki: Shinki
Why?: Canonly, Jade is a soldier, so he follows whatever orders his superiors give him. He's also no higher than a colonel even though others have said that even at his age he could easily rank much much higher. (He just chooses not to because he's kind of lazy.) He also usually takes to the shadows of the group, only suggesting and not commanding paths that they should take knowing full well that his plans will garner the best results (having most experience out of the whole party). In having that mindset, he wouldn't make a very good god, but an extremely valuable and adept weapon/tool. Cause Of Death: During the final fight with Vandestelca, he doesn't make it out with the rest of the crew.
Vessel: His signature red spear
Name Location: Right on his sternum.
Power: energy sourcing
What this would convert to is energy blasts. (Since this is a power he's had consistently even with his powers nerfed in canon)
